On Juice World Charging Day 2021, Juice Technology is breaking a lance for cybersecurity and charging infrastructure

Juice Technology AG, manufacturer of charging stations and software, and leader in mobile charging stations for electric vehicles, is raising the issue of safety at the second Juice World Charging Day 2021 in Sugar Mountain in Munich.

The heart of every charging solution is flawless software. That is why Juice sees itself first and foremost as a software company. Juice does not develop isolated individual solutions, because all products are part of an overall system in which the software plays the main role. An important building block for this is the recently launched j+ pilot app. It is Juice's first software product that works outside of charging stations, but is nevertheless part of an entire ecosystem and will be gradually expanded to include other vehicles and functions, such as fleet management. The j+ pilot thus becomes the key to the vehicle and the charging station with all kinds of evaluations. The next steps will be the integration of the load management system, the integration of smart home, access to clean energy and other functions that fully open up the world of e-mobility to the user.

The Internet of Things requires precautionary measures

A strong focus on software makes it essential to take care of the security aspect. Since everything is increasingly connected - from smartwatches and cell phones to cars and charging stations - the greatest danger comes from vulnerabilities in the software. Comprehensive connectivity brings with it many opportunities, but also an inherent cybersecurity risk. Attacks affect not only computers and smartphones, but also power plants, cars and charging stations.

All of the players involved - energy suppliers, charging station and car manufacturers - have so far only taken care of their own part when it comes to security. It is of the utmost importance to keep an eye on the entire system. After all, the entire infrastructure offers a surface for attack. Prof. Thomas R. Köhler, cyber security expert and board member of Juice Technology AG, therefore underlines the need to look at the system as a whole:

"It is important for Juice to raise awareness of the dangers of cyber attacks, to raise awareness of the issue and to signal that the company is working on it within its means, but also to get the other parties involved, be they service providers, energy suppliers or car manufacturers, to discuss it openly."

The 3-level concept for comprehensive security

Security in the charging infrastructure is based on three pillars: physical security, user security and software security. In terms of cybersecurity, Juice differentiates itself from other competitors through its two approaches "Software First" and "Security by Design" - i.e. compliance with cybersecurity standards from the first components to the finished product. Juice achieves this with its own chipsets, encrypted communication as standard and with continuous testing, especially by independent software engineers. Juice also sets up its own bug bounty program.

This software-driven development within the industry is changing the entire market. Juice will therefore initially approach energy suppliers with the intention of creating a network-wide standard for charging management. The standardization of billing and payment options, for example with a credit card requirement as required in Germany, will also be pushed forward. However, this will no longer be necessary as soon as ISO 15118 becomes the standard, whereby the car communicates independently with the charging station and no additional measures are necessary for activation. In addition, all other players, such as property owners and property managers, must be included in the discussion. Because only with a jointly agreed strategy can future cyber threats to electric cars, charging stations and the power grid be fended off.

Sustained high demand for charging options

CEO and founder of Juice Technology Christoph Erni took the opportunity to also summarize last year’s developments at this year’s Juice World Charging Day.

In 2021, Juice continued to grow strongly and is now a company with offices worldwide. Due to high demand, production capacities at the locations in Germany and China were further expanded. Juice also increased its workforce and moved into a new headquarters.

Individual products for East and West

Global expansion requires that products are adapted to local conditions - especially to the power grid and local regulations. That is why the JUICE BOOSTER 2 is now also available in versions for the special requirements of the Chinese and US markets.

In order to close the gap between the mobile JUICE BOOSTER 2 and the JUICE CHARGER 2, which has proven itself as a public charging station, Juice Technology has developed the JUICE CHARGER easy and the JUICE CHARGER me. Both charging stations are eligible for KfW funding in Germany and are therefore particularly attractive for end customers. While the JUICE CHARGER easy turns the portable JUICE BOOSTER 2 into a fixed charging station, the simple, inexpensive JUICE CHARGER me is the ideal wall box for bringing electric mobility to all households in a future-proof manner.

All Juice News at a Glance

  1. The Juice World Charging Day 2021 was attended by around 200 industry representatives, investors, media representatives and Juice Technology employees. The event on cybersecurity and charging infrastructure took place at the recently opened "Happening Place" Sugar Mountain in a former concrete plant in the southwest of Munich.
  2. In addition to the founder and CEO of Juice, Christoph Erni, cybersecurity expert Prof. Thomas R. Köhler also gave an overview of the current state of security in e-mobility. The speakers showed why there is still a great need for action in the e-mobility industry when it comes to cybersecurity: Despite the explosive nature of the topic, a large number of companies within the industry have not yet dealt with it sufficiently.
  3. Juice Technology's bug bounty program invites security researchers to participate in identifying and fixing bugs in the software and rewards the discoverers with cash prizes. About Juice Technology

Juice Technology AG, headquartered in Cham (Zug, Switzerland), is a global manufacturer of charging solutions for electric vehicles. The company's extensive product portfolio of AC and DC charging stations, from light mobile devices to large fast chargers, makes it one of the very few full-range suppliers in the industry. Juice has dominated the global market for mobile 22 kW charging stations since 2014.

The decisive difference to other solutions available on the market is the consistent software orientation. All devices marked with "J+" are based on the same processor and the same firmware, which means they are compatible with each other. By using a single, consistent software architecture, Juice saves a lot of time, effort and money. Solutions such as omnidynamic load management, credit card payment or the interface-open backend are therefore available for the entire product range.

The Juice Group has a global presence with its own locations, subsidiaries and partner companies. The group includes Juice Services AG, Juice Telemetrics AG, the German Juice Europe GmbH with a branch in Munich, Juice Iberia SL in Malaga, Zhejiang Juice Technology Co., Ltd in Hangzhou, China and Juice Americas Inc. in Delaware, USA. It also has a global network of resellers. A total of over 170 people currently work in the areas of research and development, production, marketing, administration, purchasing and sales as well as logistics.
