"Miracle worker", "rocket-like acceleration", "a sensation, especially for a startup", "makes the Aston Martin look really, really old fashioned" ... that's what the media is saying about electric cars. You could almost take a test drive in a car with new drive technology - if only there weren't all these skeptical reactions from everyone around you. But there are some solid arguments in favor of electric driving:
Fact 1: E-driving is for smart calculators
The TCO (Total Cost of Ownership - operating costs over the entire period of use) is less than half compared to vehicles with combustion engines. Even today, the purchase costs for electric vehicles are hardly higher than for other cars in their class. However, the operating costs (energy, insurance, taxes) are only 10 - 30% compared to combustion engines, depending on the country. Due to the lack of parts and fluids that are susceptible to wear, there are little to no maintenance costs and the electric vehicles can last at least 500,000 km, according to conservative estimates.
Over five years, a Tesla Model S costs the same as a VW Golf, and a Renault Zoe costs as much as a better scooter.
Fact 2: E-driving is something for the image-conscious
The world has always been driven by people who recognize what is going to change before the masses. You don't have to be an esoteric to sense that the phase of showing off, elbows and noise is over. Elegance, lightness of being, responsible yet fun use of resources are the virtues of the future. E-drivers experience all of this every day in their travels - and they miraculously infect all the people they let ride in their machines of the future.
Fact 3: E-driving is something for those interested in ecology
Waste has never been classy - yet cars with combustion engines do exactly that. Electric cars are different: even a sedan like Tesla's Model S, which weighs around 2 tons, only needs the equivalent of around 2 liters of gasoline per 100 km. How is that? Electric motors are simply more efficient because a lot of energy is recovered from every deceleration. In addition, you can easily fill up with electricity generated using only water, wind and solar power. If ALL cars were electric, that would only amount to a measly additional 9% of today's total electricity consumption!
It's amazing that we didn't notice all these years that...
... we only use 15% of 100% gasoline for propulsion and let the rest go into heat.
... every day we simply waste endless amounts of energy instead of using it again in some way.
... for 100% of a car we have to carry over 80% of the wear and tear on ancillary components just to keep this highly complex marvel of a gas explosion machine from collapsing. Timing belt, camshaft, spark plugs. Oil pan, V-belt, gearbox. Air filter, oil filter, radiator. An electric car needs none of these.
Somehow there seem to be points that speak in favor of a change in technology. It would be worth a try, wouldn't it? You don't have much to lose, because if you don't like it, you can just stick with the old one. Conventional petrol engines won't die out any time soon. And after all, people still like to look at classic record players today ;-)
And one more thing: If you book a test drive now (just for the sake of it and without any intention, of course), don't say we didn't warn you. Expect the worst. Expect to fall in love all over again. Bet you?
