Elektromobilität im DACH-Raum: Der Markt kommt in Schwung

Electromobility in the DACH region: The market is gaining momentum

Departure with solid foundations

Electromobility is gaining increasing momentum in Europe. The first half of 2025 shows that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are continuing to establish themselves in the market. The countries in the DACH region – Germany, Austria, and Switzerland – are experiencing significant growth. The market is picking up noticeably – driven by rising new registrations, significant growth in Germany, and successful developments in heavy-duty transport.

The most important developments in the first half of 2025

  • Germany leads Europe with 248,726 new BEV registrations in the first half of 2025.
  • Switzerland has the highest number of electric trucks in Europe: 16.3% of new registrations in heavy goods transport are BEVs.
  • Across Europe, around 701,100 new BEVs were registered between January and May 2025 – an increase of over 26% compared to the previous year.

Switzerland: Dynamic growth with exemplary figures in heavy goods transport

With 4,417 new registrations of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in June 2025, Switzerland set a new monthly record. Overall, the share of purely electric vehicles in the first half of the year was just under 24 percent, with 22,200 new vehicles. This places Switzerland in tenth place in Europe. The vehicle fleet is also growing steadily: from around 7,500 electric vehicles in 2015 to over 234,000 in 2025 – more than a threefold increase within a decade.
The trend is particularly pronounced for heavy commercial vehicles: 16.3 percent of newly registered trucks in 2025 will be fully electric – a record among European comparisons. The public charging infrastructure is also developing positively: with over 16,000 publicly accessible charging points, the country is recording an increase of 6.5 percent over the previous year.

Germany: From slump to leading European position

In May 2025, 43,060 purely battery-electric passenger vehicles (BEVs) were newly registered in Germany – an impressive increase of 44.9 percent compared to the same month last year. The market share was 18 percent. In June, the number of new registrations rose further to 47,163 vehicles, corresponding to a BEV share of 18.4 percent.
A total of 248,726 new BEVs were registered in Germany in the first half of 2025 – more than ever before in a single half year. This represents an increase of 35.1 percent compared to the same period last year and a market share of 17.7 percent. This means that Germany not only surpassed the figures from 2024, but also the previous record year of 2023.
This clearly overcomes the significant decline of 27.4 percent in 2024 following the sudden cessation of funding at the end of 2023. However, Germany remains a key country for electromobility in Europe, with around 1.79 million battery-electric vehicles (market share: approximately 3.6%).

Austria: Constant growth on a solid basis

In Austria, the BEV share of the total vehicle fleet is approximately 3.8 percent, corresponding to approximately 200,600 vehicles. Tesla is the market leader with 34,300 vehicles, closely followed by Volkswagen with 26,200. Purely battery-electric models are thus increasingly gaining widespread acceptance here as well – among both private and commercial user groups.

Europe: Significant increase in new registrations

Across Europe, around 701,100 new BEVs were registered between January and May 2025, an increase of over 26 percent compared to the same period last year. Germany was followed by the United Kingdom (177,500 registrations) and France (119,481). In the model ranking, the Tesla Model Y leads Europe with 45,700 registrations, followed by the VW ID.4 with 34,200 registrations.

Conclusion

Electromobility in the DACH region is on the right track. Registration numbers are rising significantly, the range of models is more diverse than ever, and the charging infrastructure is developing positively. Germany, with its dynamic recovery, demonstrates the potential for consistent market development. Austria is establishing itself with stable demand, and Switzerland is also achieving success, particularly in heavy goods transport and the expansion of its public charging network.
The conditions for further growth are in place. Developments in the second half of the year will show whether the positive momentum can be continued—especially against the backdrop of global supply chains, falling battery prices, and new political decisions.
